A quick homeowner checklist for the most common no-cool causes — and how to tell when it's time to stop troubleshooting and call.
1. Thermostat: confirm it's set to Cool, the setpoint is below room temperature, and the batteries (if it has them) are good.
2. Filter: a badly clogged filter can choke airflow enough that the house never cools. If it's dirty, change it.
3. Breakers: check the panel for a tripped breaker for the AC or furnace/air handler. Reset once. If it trips again, stop — repeated resets on a tripping breaker risk damage and indicate an electrical fault.
4. Outdoor unit: is the fan on top spinning? Is the unit packed with cottonwood fluff or debris? A gentle rinse of the coil fins with a garden hose (power off) can help a struggling unit.
5. Ice: check the copper lines at the outdoor unit and the indoor coil. If you see frost or ice, see our guide on frozen systems — and turn cooling off.
If the outdoor fan isn't spinning, the breaker keeps tripping, the system is icing, or everything above checks out and it still blows warm — that's the line. Beyond it are refrigerant, capacitor, contactor, and compressor issues that need meters and gauges to diagnose safely.
